Statement of Intent for French

At Berkley, we introduce children to French in a fun and engaging way. Through songs, games, simple conversations and stories, pupils begin to explore a new language and culture. Our aim is to build confidence, spark curiosity, and lay the foundations for future language learning as they move on to middle school.

Characteristics of Languages

• The confidence to speak with good intonation and pronunciation.
• Fluency in reading.
• Fluency and imagination in writing.
• A strong awareness of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
• A passion for languages and a commitment to the subject.
• The ability to use language creatively and spontaneously.
• An independance in their studies and the ability to draw upon a wide range of resources.
