Sports Grants

We are extremely proud of the high-quality PE and sport provision at our school. Our children enjoy a wide range of opportunities to take part in a variety of sports and physical activities, helping them to develop fitness, teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong love of being active.

SWIMMING

The National Curriculum states that all children should be able to swim at least 25 metres by the time they leave primary school.

At Berkley First School, we recognise swimming as a vital life skill. That’s why all children in Reception, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, and Year 4 take part in swimming lessons throughout the academic year.

INTER SCHOOLS FESTIVALS AND COMPETITIONS

At Berkley First School, we greatly value the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports festivals and competitions with other local schools.
These events allow our children to experience new sports, develop their skills, and demonstrate teamwork and sportsmanship in a friendly, competitive environment. Taking part helps build confidence, fosters a sense of community, and encourages our pupils to be active and ambitious in all areas of sport.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR CLUBS

Throughout the year, Berkley First School offers a wide range of sporting extra-curricular clubs to support and encourage active, healthy lifestyles beyond the classroom.
Children are given the opportunity to explore and develop their skills in a variety of sports, including football, tag rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, and multi-skills. These clubs promote physical fitness, teamwork, and perseverance, while also allowing children to discover new interests and talents in a fun and supportive environment. Our dedicated staff and specialist coaches ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability, feel welcome and motivated to take part.

BREAKFAST CLUB, BREAK AND LUNCHTIMES

At Berkley First School, we regularly review and care for our playground and field to create a fun, active, and safe environment. This helps support children’s physical activity during Breakfast Club, After School Clubs, as well as at break and lunchtimes

Purpose of the Sports Grant

In the UK, primary schools receive special funding to support PE and sport because helping children stay active and healthy is really important. This funding is designed to improve the quality of physical education and sporting opportunities in schools. It means we can provide better equipment, exciting activities, and more chances for every child to enjoy being active. The goal is to encourage healthy habits from an early age, helping children build confidence, stay fit, and develop a lifelong love of sport and movement
