Charcoal and Dance

Inspired by the work of Heather Hanson, Owls explored how they could use charcoal and gestural movements made by the body to produce dance-based performance art. Working in groups, they made expressive marks with charcoal. They moved their arms, legs and body whilst moving to the rhythm of the music creating broad sweeping marks on the paper around them. They listened to the music, changing the speed of their movements and the nature of their mark-making. The children took turns and worked on each other’s drawings. Owls really enjoyed the freedom of being expressive, immersing themselves in their artwork and relishing in the liberating medium of charcoal.
